Young brains at risk? How Australian drug education may produce harms in efforts to reduce them

In this presentation Adrian will critically examine the overly negative representation of young people and their drug use in Australian drug education. Adrian will look closely at the ways that neuroscience is increasingly used in order to approach youth drug use as primarily caused by failed decisions made by young people with compromised brains. In relying on a wholly negative model and sidelining the influence of social context on drug use, Adrian’s presentation will explore how Australian drug education may produce rather than reduce drug-related harms. Finally, he will draw on the opinions of a group of Australian young men to explore an approach to drug education able to consider both pleasures and dangers.
